The use of acrylic nails is one method for artificially strengthening or lengthening nails. It is an option to help the consumer who has, for some reason nails that are weak, damaged, or short. Some people have brittle nails and it is difficult for those nails to grow beyond a certain length. Some consumers choose to have acrylic nails applied for special occasions or a function where they want to look their best and they want their nails to look their best as well.

Today, the consumer has several options available when choosing a nail overlay. Acrylic nails are believed to be the strongest and the most durable and long lasting of all the options. As with any nail option chosen, the acrylic nail application should be done well and with care. Otherwise, the nails may be too thick and would appear unnatural. It is important that as you consider the application of acrylic nails that you find a professional manicurist who is experienced in the application of acrylic nails. Doing so should help ensure that you will achieve a professional result and have thin, natural-looking nail.

Once the choice is made to have acrylic nails applied, your nails will need regular maintenance. Acrylic nails usually need to be filed in every two to three weeks – however this really depends on how fast your natural nails will grow. For some people who are tough on their nails, these visits will be more frequent in order to avoid nail loosening. This can lead to nail mildew if the acrylic nail becomes loose and if water gets trapped underneath the acrylic nail.

The use of acrylic nails is fairly recent. The acrylic nail is a nail that is pasted onto the real nail. Acrylic nails are not natural are made by creating a chemical powder and liquid. Today, experts consider that ethyl methacrylate (EMA) is the best chemical liquid available for acrylic nails, and it is considered safe.

A second option that seems to be available in discount nail salons is Methyl Methacrylate or MMA. This chemical liquid may cause harmful effects that may include fungal infections, nail deformities and other problems. The only reason that MMA is chosen by some for their acrylic nails is that MMA’s cost is less than the cost of EMA. The FDA, Food and Drug Administration, last year did a cosmetic ingredient review of EMA, found it safe and reinforced its recommendation that MMA not be used in nail salons. Keeping this in mind, you way want to pay a little extra and get acrylic nails that the FDA views safe.

If you choose acrylic nails, you can rest assured that it is the most commonly-used artificial nail in use. Choosing this nail means that finding a manicurist when traveling should not be difficult if you need repair or maintenance of your artificial nail.
